As a response to the “Fame Game” lecture given earlier this week, we’re suppose to start off our blogs with a response of Lady Gaga becoming the new Creative Director of Polaroid. First, to assess such a controversial decision by the company I have to mention some facts: it’s originally an American company based on consumer electronics and eyewear. It was mostly popularized for its instant film cameras, which reached the market in 1948. After several failed attempts to infiltrate the newly found digital camera and scanner market in 2001 the company declared bankrupt. In 2009 for much disappointment of many fans it discontinued its production of instant film and cameras in 2009, which was again picked up by The Impossible Project in 2010, which seems to attract a new wave of instant film lovers. Now the appointment of a pop singer and artist Lagy Gaga at first seems like another attempt for radical innovation by the company to breach the digital camera market with the so called “Grey Label” consisting of a GL10 Instant Mobile Printer, GL30 Instant Digital Camera and GL20 Camera Glasses. For me the products seem a bit far reached and futuristic and risk of becoming nothing more but a collectors item and having very slim chances of popularity in the mainstream market. What is more, they lack compatibility with apple products, which are dominating the current digital market give it a severe disadvantage. All in all, Lady Gaga’s influence seems nothing more but a desperate cry for attention by the ever failing company.
